Vox Pops Analysis

To gather more information on existing thrillers and what existing thrillers contain that excites the audience and grabs peoples attention when watching them we did a vox pop in which we questioned a few of our fellow year group what their favorite thriller is and why and what do they look forward to in a thriller so we could see if we could incorporate their favorite events and ideas into our own thriller opening to create a effective thriller opening.

The first question we asked was what is their favorite thriller and why and these where the responses:

  •  "The Bourne trilogy because they're exciting and keep me on the edge of my seat".
  • "Skyfall because i like the actors and how they portray the scenery around them in the film and it's also good how they mixed in all the gadgets from all the James Bonds before this one".
  • "my favorite thriller is the Dark Knight because it has lots of action and great acting".
  • "It has to be the Departed because it's got a good story line and is perfect in every way. The story is interesting and keeps you guessing all the way through".
From the responses given we can gather typical events and themes that people enjoy seeing in a thriller and we have some ideas of what we could incorporate maybe into our thriller opening. One main thing is a good story line that needs to be interesting yet quite fast paced that gets the audience on the edges of their seats at all times and keeps them guessing what comes next after our opening scene. The other idea that we can see is the use of reoccurring mise-en-scene factors that really emphasizes the genre just like the use of old gadgets in the James bond series in the newest skyfall film. We could use props that emphasizes the fact our opening thriller scene is a detective genre.

The second we asked was what do they look for in a thriller and these where those responses:

  • "A good plot, has to have good actors and its got to have a good storyline".
  • "Like it to have all the conventions of a thriller such as; car chases, action, main antagonist and a good storyline altogether".
  • "Interesting story and interesting characters as if there wasn't a good storyline it wouldn't be a good thriller".
From these results we can see a big trend in what makes a thriller what it is and it is clearly a need for a good and interesting storyline, one person we interviewed said a extremely good point that if there wasn't a good storyline and actors them it wouldn't be a thriller, we don't want our opening to be rubbish we want it to be interesting. Because we are doing a detective style thriller we especially need to get the audience gripped from the beginning of the film in the opening sequence with a strong yet mysterious storyline sure to keep the audiences attention.
